Just opened on May 6th, 2024, Sikkim’s Sanglaphu Cho Lake, also known as the “Great Lake,” is a breathtaking new addition to the state’s tourist attractions. Nestled amidst the majestic Himalayas, this high-altitude lake offers stunning scenery, cultural significance, and an unforgettable adventure.
Location and Significance:
Sanglaphu Cho Lake sits at a staggering altitude of 5,080 meters (16,670 feet), making it a true marvel in the Himalayas. While an exact distance from Gangtok is difficult to pinpoint due to mountainous terrain, expect a scenic but lengthy journey by car. The estimated distance is roughly 168 to 178 kilometers from Gangtok, depending on the route chosen. The lake is roughly 5 kilometers from Yumesamdong (Zero Point) near Lachung.
Local reverence surrounds Sanglaphu Cho Lake. Considered sacred by the Sikkimese people, its pristine waters hold immense religious significance. Locals often visit to seek blessings and offer prayers. The opening ceremony itself included a special prayer led by monks, highlighting the deep respect for the lake’s spiritual importance.

Spring (March to June) is the ideal time to visit Sanglaphu Cho Lake. Clear skies and comfortable temperatures make exploring the surroundings a delight. However, be prepared for unpredictable mountain weather and potential snowfall at high altitudes.

Since Sanglaphu Cho is a new destination, accommodation options directly at the lake are limited. Most visitors choose to stay in Lachung, which offers a variety of hotels and homestays catering to different budgets.
