The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the DHR or the Toy Train, is a narrow-gauge railway in West Bengal, India. It runs between Siliguri and Darjeeling, a hill station in the Himalayas. The DHR is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The DHR was built in the late 19th century by the British. It was designed to carry passengers and goods up the steep mountainside to Darjeeling. The railway is only 2 ft (610 mm) wide, and the trains are very small.
The journey from Siliguri to Darjeeling takes about 7 hours. The train winds its way through the hills, passing through forests, tea plantations, and villages. The views from the train are spectacular.
Origin and Heritage
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, inaugurated in 1881, was the brainchild of Franklin Prestage and closely associated with the vision of Sir Ashley Eden, the then Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. The purpose was to connect the plains of Siliguri to the hill station of Darjeeling, making the journey more accessible and comfortable.
